Labor shortages spur robotics on the farm: a panel discussion at the Museum of Science

As part of National Robotics Week for 2012, the Museum of Science held their third annual Robot Block Party. I was there representing Jaybridge Robotics, and was privileged to participate in a panel discussion on the role of robotics in agriculture. The panel conversation, guided by Sean, touched on a number of topics --- but the subject of farm labor trends, and how they are enabling the growth of robotics in agriculture really took center stage. more »

Software Quality - Formal Inspections

This is another post in our ongoing series about software quality.  Last time, we talked about why software quality is unique for unmanned and driverless systems.  This time, we’ll cover one of the techniques we use at Jaybridge to help ensure the software we develop is robust and efficient across a wide range of operating conditions, formal inspections. more »

Software Quality for Autonomous Systems

At Jaybridge, we treat software quality seriously. This is the first post in a series covering why we think quality is important for unmanned or driverless systems, and the techniques we use to develop software which is robust and efficient in real world workflows. more »

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) at MODEX 2012

Attending MODEX was a marvelous opportunity to see autonomous vehicles in action, some of them so established in the manufacturing that the very terminology predates the popularization of the word "autonomy." In particular, Automated Guided Vehicles, or AGVs, have been in use in factories for decades. more »

Drone (UAV) technology reaches new heights: A terrific discussion on NPR's Science Friday with Missy Cummings of MIT

Past Jaybridge contributor Dr. Missy Cummings, made a guest appearance last week on NPR’s terrific show Talk of the Nation Science Friday with host Ira Flatow. Missy is director of the Humans and Automation Lab at MIT. The interview is of particular value to anyone interested in human-robot interfaces and emerging knowledge of Drone technology. Missy is joined on the show by Peter Singer, author of Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century, and by Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine. With the use of Drones expanding far beyond military applications into a wide range of commercial and hobby applications, this program presents a fascinating discussion of the future and the accompanying issues of accountability, safety and legality. more »

Mining executives optimistic, but concerned about growing technology/skills gaps in their workforce

Mining may be the only industry in the world today where 69 percent of senior executives state they are optimistic about their business outlook. Responding to the growing need for energy and minerals, particularly in Asia, miners are riding the high side of the supply/demand wave. Leveraging a business opportunity of historic proportions, they have zeroed in on optimizing operations and productivity. One of the natural outcomes of that effort has been significant growth in automation, including large autonomous vehicles such as hauling trucks and drill rigs. more »
